In fiscal year 1998, there were more than 24,000 federal employment
discrimination suits brought against private employers. The plaintiffs won 35%
of the cases that were decided at trial, up from 23% in 1990, and the median
damage award to plaintiffs was $137,000. However, that does not tell the full
story. In 14% of the cases, the amount awarded to the plaintiffs reached over $1
million and in 10% of the cases the award eclipsed
the $10 million mark.
